Alden Olson

d. November 27, 2005

Alden Olson grew up on a farm near Caledonia, MN. He graduated from Caledonia High School in 1948 and received a scholarship to Luther College in Decorah, IA. While attending college, he went home almost every weekend to help his family on the farm. He graduated in 1952 with

a degree in Social Studies education. He was then drafted into the Army in 1954. After his two-year stint in the military, he started his teaching career in Jasper, MN. In 1957, he married Frances Schroer of La Crosse, WI.

Al took a year off from teaching to obtain his master's degree in education from the University of Minnesota. After completing his degree, he then became a principal and later the superintendent of the Hitterdahl, MN school system. During this time, his children, Scott and Darla, were born. He also achieved his Education Specialist degree while in Hitterdahl. Another move was made to Fairmont, MN to become High School Principal and Athletic Director. Three years later, Al made the move to Cottage Grove when he was hired as Assistant Principal at Park Junior High. At this time, he became an avid Vikings fan and began to purchase season tickets. He spent many Sundays telling the coach how to manage the team. His one regret was that they never won the Superbowl. When an opening became available as principal at Oltman Junior High, Al applied. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1987.

After enjoying several years of retirement, Al got back in the education field by running for the South Washington County School Board. He served on the board for 15 years and had just been elected for another 4-year term. He also was a member of the Minnesota State School Board, Minnesota State High School League, elected to the All-State school board and was on the board of 916 through Century College. He enjoyed lobbying at the state and national level for educational issues.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and associates. May he rest in peace.

Age 75 of Cottage Grove, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Nov 27th, 2005. Survived by his wife Fran, sister Shirley Ziegelmaier, one son, Scott (Beth) Olson and one daughter, Darla (Brian) Schroeder and 4 grandchildren; Trent, Claire, Lexi and Grace.
