Beverly Marie Bartl

May 4, 1938 — April 26, 2026

Newport

Beverly Marie Goodnature Bartl, age 87, of Newport, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Beverly was born on May 4, 1938, to Wilma and Daniel Goodnature. She grew up on a farm between Geneva and Hollandale, Minnesota, and was the oldest of five children.

She attended Blooming Prairie High School for three years and graduated from St. Augustine High School in Austin, Minnesota, in 1956.

Beverly was the first member of her family to attend college. She raised turkeys to earn money to attend the College of Saint Benedict and then went on to complete nurses’ training in Mankato. She then moved to the big city and lived on Randolph Avenue in Saint Paul. She worked at Miller Hospital and then at Dr. Fiefield’s dental office.

It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Tom Bartl. They were set up on a blind date, and the rest is history, celebrating 60 years of marriage this past July.

Newport was home to Tom and Beverly for five decades. It was there they raised their five children and served their community for 65 years as the owners of John Bartl Hardware.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted and active member of her church community, regularly attending daily Mass and Bible study. As a Eucharistic Minister, she found great fulfillment in bringing communion to others at St. Thomas Aquinas, Woodwinds Hospital, and Red Rock Manor.

Beverly was very active in her community- serving as a founding member of the Newport Heritage Preservation Committee, a Newport Library Board member, a long-time election judge, and an active Dorothy Day volunteer. She was a Newport Volunteer of the Year and was honored for her 30 years of service with a plaque and a tree planted outside of Newport City Hall in her honor.

For thirty-five years, Beverly and Tom vacationed on Sanibel Island every winter. She found peace shelling along the shore, watching the sunrise over the Gulf, and exploring the trails of 'Ding' Darling. Beverly took great joy in passing this love of nature down to her children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories as she shared these island traditions with them over the years.

Nothing brought Beverly more happiness than her family, who were truly her greatest joy. She cherished every moment spent with them, whether she was meticulously creating beautiful table settings for the holidays or ensuring that beloved family food traditions were passed down to the next generation. She was the cornerstone of every celebration, keeping her family’s favorite holiday traditions alive with love and care.

She will always be remembered for her wonderful smile and her kind heart. We will miss her dearly.

She is survived by husband, Tom Bartl; children, Margaret Allenburg (John), Steve Bartl (Jennifer), Tommy Bartl (Ana), and Mary Jo Katras (Steve); grandchildren, Fae, Jack, Sophia, Josie, and Harrison.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Marie Bartl; her parents, Daniel and Wilma Goodnature; brother, Jerald Goodnature; and sister, Mary Beth Mulligan.
