David Sherman, age 62, of Cottage Grove, Minnesota died peacefully at home on March 23, 2026 after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Dave is survived by wife, Tara; sons, Vincent and Joel; mother, Kathleen; and siblings, Mike (Anne), Sue (Ray) Dickenson, and Cindy (Jim) Lanik; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by father, Joel.
Dave was born on December 18, 1963 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Joel and Kathleen Sherman. After he graduated high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico for four years. Following the Air Force, Dave began working for Buckbee Mears as a chemical etcher. While at work, Dave met Tara and they were married in 1999. Shortly after, Dave started a position as a Correctional Officer at the Washington County Jail. His sons remember him as a loving and considerate father who taught them handy man skills and showed them how to be compassionate to others and encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Dave was skilled at carpentry and woodworking and was often found working on home renovations or helping others with their house projects. He was a lighthearted and gentle individual who enjoyed a good laugh and who was passionate about making people smile. He was a dedicated member of the community and volunteered his time to help the elderly with grocery shopping and other tasks. Among the many things that he enjoyed were traveling, gardening, and biking. Many people recognized him as a master puzzler as he completed over 500 puzzles during his last few years of life.
A funeral service will be at 11 AM with visitation beginning at 10 AM on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Five Oaks Church, 4416 Radio Drive, Woodbury, Minnesota 55129. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dave's life. Private interment will be held at the Fort Snelling Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the ALS Association. The family would like to thank the care team at the Minneapolis Veterans Medical Center for their compassion and dedication.
