In Loving Memory of Garfield Emmanuel Smith

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Garfield Emmanuel Smith at the age of 79, who went home to be with the Lord on June 12th, 2025. Garfield was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished uncle, and adoring grandfather. His life was defined by an unwavering commitment to his faith, family, community, and justice—values deeply instilled in him by his father, Everett Smith of Nicodemus, KS, a Baptist minister, and his mother, Gladys (Gary) Smith of Abilene, KS, a dedicated teacher. Growing up in Abilene alongside his older siblings, Jean and Edward, Garfield learned the virtues of compassion, integrity, and service at an early age.

With a keen intellect and a strong sense of purpose, Garfield pursued his passion for law by earning his Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota. His legal career was distinguished by hard work, unyielding integrity, and a commitment to public service. Garfield’s professional journey included serving as Associate Counsel for the Minnesota Metropolitan Council and later as Director for the Minnesota Department of Revenue, where he played an instrumental role in shaping policies that benefited countless individuals. Motivated by his belief in justice and the transformative power of legal advocacy, he established his own law office, where he continued to serve his community with expertise and compassion.

Garfield’s professional accomplishments were rivaled only by the warmth and generosity he brought to his relationships. It was during his time at Fort Hays State University that he met his soulmate, Mary Alice Stapleton. After Mary graduated, the couple embarked on a new life together in Minneapolis, where Garfield pursued his legal studies but also began a flourishing career. Together, they nurtured a family characterized by enduring love, patience, a good sense of humor, and mutual support, raising three children—Michelle (54), Christopher (52), and Angela (42)—in their home in Cottage Grove, MN. Their over fifty-six years of marriage were filled with love, laughter, and remarkable memories, and Garfield’s love extended deeply to his grandchildren, Rose Deziel (25) and Mike Deziel (23), whose accomplishments filled him with pride.

His guidance, wisdom, and kind spirit will be remembered and deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless lives he touched throughout his distinguished career. A celebration of Garfield’s remarkable journey will be held in honor of his extraordinary life. Family and friends will gather to share stories, honor his lasting legacy, and bid farewell to a man whose contributions to society and his loved ones left an indelible mark.

May Garfield Emmanuel Smith rest in peace, and may his memory remain a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
