Janet Smith

February 2, 1930 — March 4, 2024

Cottage Grove

Janet was born at home in Winnebago, MN to George and Cecile Jenkins. Growing up on the family farm during the Great Depression and WWII, she learned to cook on a wood fired stove, attended a one room country school, and sewed dresses from printed flour sacks. She was raised Lutheran.

After high school, she attended Mankato State Teachers College and, at age 19, she began teaching in Heron Lake and then at St. Paul Park. At Park she met a high school teacher named Granville "Granny" Smith. They married April 5, 1952, had four children, and were together for 68 years.

After raising their children, Janet enjoyed meeting friends over coffee, golfing, camping at the state parks, and traveling – including all over Europe, and Hawaii. She was an avid reader and also found time for oil painting, quilting, calligraphy and other craft projects. She was a longtime member of Newport Lutheran Church.

Janet resided at Norris Square, Cottage Grove for the last 12 years. She retained her sense of humor and positive outlook to the end, endearing her to the staff at Norris. We want to thank them for their wonderful care.

Janet was preceded in death by her husband Granville, son Joel, and siblings Roy (Marjorie), James and Dee Ann (Jim Ziemer).  She is survived by children Craig (Liz), Robin (Tom), and Brad (Marie), grandchildren Patrick (Kenzie), Andrew (Jenny), David (Katherine), Hannah (Sam), Ezra, great granddaughter Emerson, and her brother Marv (Joyce)
