John E. "Butch" Duff, of Newport, passed away at home on Sunday, November 20, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha; parents-in-law, Chester and Mariam Schmegal; sister, Lucy (Roger) Parpart; sister-in-law, Sheryl Duff; and niece, Melissa Crock.
Butch will be missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Penny; sons, John C. (Beth) and Nicholas (Nicole); grandchildren, Desmond and Ivy; siblings, Michael, Laurie Bromen, and Dennis; brothers-in-law, Paul (Twyla) and Matthew (Genine) Schmegal; and many other cherished family members and friends.
Butch was a decorated U.S. Army Veteran, who proudly served his country in Vietnam. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 98 in St. Paul Park, serving as Post Historian, Honor Guard member, and master Booya chef while frequently volunteering at other Post events.
Butch was an avid bow hunter and fisherman. When he wasn't spending time in the woods or on the water (on the ice in the winter), he loved watching wildlife in and around the Mississippi river from his home in Newport. He also enjoyed bowling and playing softball, and he was a lifelong and passionate Minnesota sports fan.
As the owner and proprietor of Broadway Automotive, Butch was a fixture in the St. Paul Park and Newport communities for over five decades. After retiring in 2017, he made the most of his newfound free time golfing, grilling and smoking meats, working in his vegetable gardens, and watching his grandkids play baseball.
Everywhere he went, people knew him and were drawn to his friendly spirit. Butch always had a smile on his face and was more than happy to lend a helping hand. He touched many lives in his 74 years and will be greatly missed.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, November 29 at 10:30 AM with visitation beginning at 9 AM at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 920 Holley Ave., St. Paul Park. Private Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
