Joylyn "Joy" Mae Schurmeier, age 98 of Cottage Grove, Minnesota passed away surrounded by her family on May 16, 2026.
Joylyn was a devoted wife and mother who dedicated her early years to raising her children before beginning a long career at Applebaum's Grocery Store, which later became Rainbow Foods. She was well known by everyone who visited the store for her genuine friendliness and warm spirit. She was an active member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), proudly achieving KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) status. Joylyn was also an avid walker who enjoyed being outdoors.Her faith was an important part of her life, and she faithfully served her church in whatever ways she could.
She and Bill, shared a love of travel, often attending Navy reunions and volunteering at the Carpenter Nature Center. Bill was an avid woodcarver and Joy enjoyed helping him paint the carvings. Above all, Joylyn found her greatest joy in spending time with her grandchildren and watching the granddogs. She leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love and selfless devotion, always putting others before herself.
Joylyn is survived by her daughter Debra and son Steven (Ginny); 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband John "Bill" Schurmeier Jr.; daughter Terry Anne and sons David and John.
A Memorial Service honoring Joylyn and her son, John (who passed away the day after her) will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 8435 St. Croix Trail, Hastings with a visitation from 9:30-10:30 AM. All are invited to a luncheon following the service. A private burial will take place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
