Marshall R. Nielsen, age 89, of St. Paul Park, passed away March 20, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.

Marshall was born July 29, 1931 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Arthur and Clara (Wilman) Nielsen.  He grew up on the West Side of St. Paul and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1949.  He was drafted into the US Army in 1951 and was stationed in Korea during his military service.  Upon his honorable discharge, he received multiple decorations for his combat actions.

Marshall was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and also worked at West Publishing where he was introduced to the love of his life, Irene Larson.  They were united in marriage on March 26, 1955 and made their home in St. Paul for a few years before moving to St. Paul Park in 1963.  Marshall worked as a postal clerk for many years, primarily at the post office St. Paul.

He enjoyed walking, cross country skiing, rollerblading, reading, music, watching westerns and in his younger years playing hockey.

Among the things that Marshall was most proud of in his life was his family.  He was a devoted husband, loving dad and grandpa.  “We were blessed to have him as our dad.”

Marshall is survived by Peter (Kathy), Paul (Laura), Janet (Michael) Malkiewicz; grandsons Jacob, Christian and Devon as well as many extended family.  He is preceded in death by his wife Irene; parents Arthur and Clara; brother Walter Nielsen and sister Audrey Bluhm.

Due to Covid-19, a private family service will be planned and held at a future date.  In recognition of Marshall’s generous heart, donations can be made to The Union Gospel Mission (https://www.ugmtc.org) or to the donor’s choice.
