Robert "Duke" Burbank, age 83 of Cottage Grove, Minnesota passed away surrounded by family on October 6, 2026.
Robert McLaren Burbank was born on December 6, 1942 to Howard and Margaret (Norling) Burbank in Portage, Wisconsin. He grew up in St. Paul Park, Minnesota and graduated in 1960 from Park High School in Cottage Grove, MN. Duke enlisted in the U.S. Navy following high school and considered it a privilege to serve his country and was proud to be a Veteran. Duke married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Shirley Koester December 15, 1962. They raised their two sons making their lifelong home in Cottage Grove. Duke graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in mechanical engineering and began working at 3M for over 34 years retiring in 2001.
In his spare time, Duke enjoyed boating, woodworking and traveling. He was an avid reader throughout his life and sailing on Lake Pepin and Lake Superior was a passion over the years. Attending the USS Skills reunion was a beloved tradition for over 15 years. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, kindness and patience. He cherished being a Grandpa and leaves behind a legacy of dedication to faith and his family.
Duke is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years Shirley; son John (Susan)- their children Madeline, Iris and Jade; son Tom (Kris)- their children Michael (Kendra), Hunter and Brady (Jayne); brother Dave Burbank; sister-in-law Darlene Winberg as well as other family and friends. Duke is preceded in death by his parents Howard and Margaret Burbank and sister-in-law Linda Burbank.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11 AM on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at All Saints Lutheran Church, 8100 Belden Boulevard; Cottage Grove, Minnesota with visitation from 10 -11 AM. All are invited to a luncheon following the service. Private interment with military honors will take place at Cottage Grove Cemetery.
