Roline Markwardt, age 101 of Cottage Grove, MN passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026.
Roline Rose Kuehn was born June 15, 1924 to Ernest and Augusta Kuehn in rural Sibley County in Minnesota, the eleventh child of twelve. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith on June 29, 1924 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bismark Township and confirmed her faith at the same church on September 3, 1939. She attended school in a one room country school until she finished 8th grade. She attended high school in Stewart for 2 years and transferred to Winthrop High School where she graduated in 1942 as the valedictorian of the class. She did clerical work including as a bank teller, 29 years at Northwestern Refining, Ashland Oil, and Marathon Oil, and 20 years at Dayton's, Federated Stores and Macy's in St. Paul. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crafting her own greeting cards, doing needlepoint and crocheting.
Roline was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings; the father of her children, Arthur Klukas and her loving husband Douglas Markwardt; sons Kevin (Linda) Klukas and James Klukas and son-in-law Brian Rudel. She is survived by her children Pamela Rudel and Vicky (Joseph) Phillips; daughter-in-law Kara Klukas; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; sister Evelyn Springer; many nieces and nephews, as well as many close friends and co-workers.
A Celebration of Life will be at 1:00 PM on Sunday, March 29, 2026 at All Saints Lutheran Church, 8100 Belden Ave. S.; Cottage Grove, MN with a visitation one hour prior to the service. All are invited to a luncheon following the service.
